Activities of the CARBONE LORRAINE Group.
Preparation of semi-products for Electrical Application activities, machining and finishing of brushes, definition and function of brush holders.

Mechanical aspects of brush operation

Deformation of commutators and out-of-round slip rings, taper, damage to tracks and axial deformation. Surface condition of commutators and slip ring holders, roughness, quality of gaps between segments and spirals, vibrations in motors and brushes, and their consequences.
Magnitude of the pressure exerted by brush holders.

Inherent brush characteristics

Patina formation process, voltage drop and friction, current distribution.

Brushes in operation

Commutation, black band curves, classification of grades for commutation aspects, effects of the peripheral speed, allowable load per brush, overlap ratio, ring materials, grades of brushes used, etc.
Diagnostics
Assembly and morphology of brushes, wear detection and alarm unit.
Precautions to be taken when cleaning and burnishing commutators, elements and events that could destroy patina.

Information exchanges

by case studies brought in by trainees, or through a slide show illustrating the appearance of some brushes placed under conditions that the trainees must discover by themselves, applying principles learned during the theoretical part.
